Gopala Anumanchipalli, PhD

University of California, Berkeley

Biography

Gopala Anumanchipalli earned a B.Tech and MS in Computer Science from IIIT Hyderabad in 2008, a Ph.D. in Language and Information Technologies from Carnegie Mellon University, and a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from IST, Lisbon. Following postdoctoral training and a role as a Full Researcher in the Department of Neurosurgery at UCSF, he joined the faculty of UC Berkeley’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences in Spring 2021, while maintaining an adjunct position at UCSF’s Department of Neurosurgery. His research focuses on the intersection of Speech Processing, Neuroscience, and Artificial Intelligence, emphasizing human-centered speech and assistive technologies. This includes bio-inspired spoken language systems, automated early diagnosis, and rehabilitation of disordered speech. In collaboration with UCSF colleagues, he develops methods to study neural mechanisms of speech and language in healthy individuals and creates Brain-Computer Interfaces to decode speech and language directly from the brain, aiding paralyzed patients with lost function.
